“Green Vista Tree Care was just outstanding. We had a huge dying tree between our neighbor’s home and ours. I was very concerned as to how it would be taken down without damaging either house. Green Vista Tree Care in a very methodically safe way took it down using a team effort and two cranes. It was fascinating to see it done. The team was just so professional from start to finish.”
Phil Klein

When is the best time of year to prune trees?
For most trees in Northern Virginia, winter (between November and March) is the ideal time to prune. Trees are dormant, which makes them less vulnerable to pests and disease, and without leaves, it’s easier to see the structure and make precise cuts. That said, timing can vary depending on the type of tree. For example, flowering trees need a different approach to preserve their blooms. When we visit your property, we’ll let you know the best schedule for your specific trees.
What is the difference between tree trimming and pruning?
In everyday conversation, we use “trimming” and “pruning” interchangeably – but behind the scenes, pruning is typically more health-focused, while trimming often refers to shaping for aesthetics or clearance. Either way, the goal is the same: to remove what’s necessary to keep your trees safe, healthy, and looking great. Whether we’re clearing out deadwood, improving structure, or making sure your tree isn’t scraping the roof, our certified arborists will use the right techniques to get it done properly.
How often should I prune my trees?
It depends on the tree. Young trees usually benefit from pruning every 2–3 years to encourage strong structure, while mature trees typically need it every 3–5 years to maintain health and safety. Trees near buildings, driveways, or utility lines may need more frequent attention, and fast-growing or stressed trees might require yearly care. When we come out for your consultation, we’ll assess your trees and recommend a pruning schedule that fits your trees’ specific needs.
What types of trees need regular pruning?
Some trees just need more attention than others. Fast-growing varieties like willows, silver maples, and Bradford pears tend to develop weak limbs or overcrowded canopies, so they benefit from more frequent pruning to stay safe and manageable. Fruit trees need yearly pruning to stay productive and at a harvestable height. Trees planted close to your home, driveway, or utility lines should be trimmed regularly to prevent damage. And if a tree is showing signs of poor structure or health issues, it’s worth keeping a closer eye on. We’ll take a look during your consultation and let you know which ones need routine care and which ones can wait a bit longer.
Will pruning prevent limbs from falling?
Pruning can’t guarantee that limbs won’t fall – nothing can completely eliminate that risk – but it does significantly reduce it. By removing dead, damaged, or structurally weak branches and thinning the canopy to reduce wind resistance, we lower the chances of major breakage during storms. Regular pruning makes your trees stronger and more resilient, which helps protect your home, yard, and anything else beneath the canopy when bad weather rolls through.
Can improper pruning damage my tree?
Unfortunately, yes – and we see the results all the time. Bad pruning can leave open wounds that attract pests and disease, or removing too much at once stresses the tree and triggers weak new growth. Poor technique often causes long-term damage that can’t be reversed. That’s why it’s so important to hire trained professionals who understand what the tree needs and how to do the job right the first time.
"Daniel and his team were unbelievably responsive and communicative and worked with me to prune my trees in a timely manner and sent me photos for confirmation despite being out of the area. He and his team did a great job!"
